For a carrier, a TMS is the operational record of every load: who booked it, which driver and truck ran it, where it went, what paperwork came back and what it paid.
The term also gets used for shipper-side and broker-side software, which solve different problems. Carrier TMS is about running trucks; broker TMS is about matching freight to carriers.
The practical test of a carrier TMS is whether the money agrees. If the rate on the load, the driver's settlement and the profit and loss report disagree, the system is generating work rather than removing it.
