What is a driver qualification file?

- Driver qualification file
- A driver qualification file is the record a carrier maintains demonstrating that each driver is qualified to operate a commercial vehicle.
A DQ file generally brings together the driver's application, their licence, their medical examiner's certificate, motor vehicle record checks and drug and alcohol testing records.
The practical difficulty is not creating the file but keeping it current: licences and medical cards expire, and a driver who has left should stop appearing in it.
Exact contents and retention periods are set by regulation and by your own policy. Confirm the current requirements with FMCSA guidance or your compliance advisor rather than relying on any vendor's summary, including this one.
